Overview

Crappa-t is a hardware electronic music project with a strict constraint: no laptop during performance or recording. Everything runs from the hardware rig, live, in real time. The constraint isn't arbitrary — it's the whole point. The unpredictability and physical presence of hardware synthesis forces a different kind of musical thinking, one that embraces accident and responds to what's actually happening in the room.

The sound blends electro — mechanical rhythms, sci-fi bass tones, machine funk — with synthwave's cinematic emotional language and acid techno's relentless filter-swept tension. These aren't genres that usually sit together, but in the context of a live hardware performance they cohese into something that feels like the soundtrack to an analogue future that never happened.

The hardware rig is substantial. The ASM Hydrasynth is the primary melodic and harmonic voice — its wave morphing engine and multi-mode filter can move from delicate pads to aggressive leads without ever losing richness. The Elektron Syntakt handles the drum machine and additional synthesis, using its per-track engine architecture to run different synthesis types on each percussion voice simultaneously. The Roland TR-8S brings classic 808 and 909 samples and synthesis as a second rhythmic layer. The Behringer TD-3 provides the acid bassline, and the Polyend Play handles sample-based composition and live remix capabilities.

The Behringer Pro VS Mini and UB-1 Micro add additional synthesis voices for maximum harmonic density when the arrangement calls for it. The whole rig runs through a hardware mixer before hitting the recording interface — no ITB processing until mastering.

AI Workflow

Cover artwork with Midjourney

Every Crappa-t release has AI-generated cover artwork. The visual identity of the project is abstract, dark, and mechanically beautiful — imagery that evokes circuitry, deep space, analogue signal processing, and urban infrastructure simultaneously. Midjourney is the tool for exploring this territory: generating dozens of visual directions rapidly, iterating on colour, composition, and texture, finding images that feel like the music sounds.

The approach treats Midjourney not as a button you press but as a creative collaborator with a particular visual vocabulary. The craft is in prompting — knowing which descriptive language produces the textures and moods that suit the aesthetic, and knowing how to iterate toward a specific visual target over multiple generation rounds.

AI-assisted mastering with LANDR

LANDR's AI mastering has been part of the Crappa-t release workflow since the first EP. Hardware-recorded mixes carry a natural dynamic range and warmth that digital mastering can easily overprocess. LANDR's AI is good at reading what a mix needs and applying transparent processing that brings it to streaming-competitive loudness without squeezing out what makes it sound alive. The AI master is the starting point; a manual check against reference tracks confirms or adjusts before final upload.

Copy and communications with Claude

Track descriptions, release notes, social bios, and press copy are written collaboratively with Claude. Electronic music releases live or die partly by the context they're given — a well-written track description on SoundCloud shapes how a listener approaches the music before a single note plays. Claude drafts; the artist edits; the final copy is always distinctly human.

Stem extension and variation exploration

An ongoing experiment: using AI-assisted stem extension tools to generate variations and extensions of recorded hardware performances. The goal isn't to replace the live performance with AI — it's to use AI-generated material as source content for sampling back into the hardware rig, creating a feedback loop between human performance and machine interpretation. Early results are interesting. This is still exploratory territory.
